Questions and answers
Grind
Which grind should I choose?
Choose the grind for the way you brew:
- Whole bean if you have a grinder. Coffee keeps its flavour far longer as beans.
- Espresso for espresso machines and most moka pots. It is fine, like table salt ground smaller.
- Filter for pour-over drippers and filter machines. It is medium, like coarse sand.
- Plunger for a French press and for cold brew. It is coarse, like sea salt.
Can you grind for my machine exactly?
We grind on a commercial grinder set for each of the four grinds above. For espresso, home machines differ, and the best results come from grinding fresh at home. If you are not sure, write to us and tell us what you use.
Freshness
When was my coffee roasted?
Every bag carries its roast date on the label. We roast on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and your order leaves us within two working days of the roast.
When does it taste best?
Most coffees taste best from about 5 days to 6 weeks after roasting. Espresso roasts often need a week to settle. Coffee does not go off after that; it slowly loses its aroma.
Why is there a small valve on the bag?
Fresh coffee gives off carbon dioxide for days after roasting. The one-way valve lets the gas out without letting air in.
Storage
How should I store my beans?
Keep them in their bag, pressed flat and sealed, or in an airtight container, in a cool, dark cupboard. Keep them away from the stove and the sun.
Should I keep coffee in the fridge or freezer?
Not in the fridge: it takes on moisture and smells. The freezer works for a sealed bag you will not open for a few weeks. Thaw it fully before you open it, and do not put it back.
Delivery
How long does delivery take?
Your order leaves us within two working days of the roast. The courier then takes 1 to 2 working days in Gauteng, 2 to 3 to the main centres and 3 to 5 to the rest of South Africa. Our shipping page has the zones and fees.
Do you deliver outside South Africa?
Not yet. We deliver to addresses in South Africa only.
Is shipping free?
Delivery is free on orders of R750 or more.
Can I collect my order?
Collection at the roastery is coming soon.
Subscriptions
How does a subscription work?
Choose a coffee subscription, a size, a grind and how often you want it: every 2 or every 4 weeks. You pay for the first delivery at checkout, and your card is charged for each delivery after that, on the day it is roasted.
Can I pause, skip or cancel?
Yes, from your account page, at any time before the next roast day. You can pause, skip the next delivery, change the coffee, size, grind or address, or cancel. There is no minimum number of deliveries.
What happens if a payment fails?
We try again over the next few days and mail you a link to update your card. If the payment still fails, we pause the subscription until you update it.
Orders and accounts
Do I need an account?
No. You can check out as a guest. With an account, you see all your orders in one place and manage subscriptions. We sign you in with a link by mail, so there is no password to remember.
Where is my invoice?
Every order has its own page, which the order confirmation mail links to. Your tax invoice is attached to the mail and on that page.
