Blackcurrant, pink grapefruit and brown sugar from the Mathira Hills farmers' society on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. AA is Kenya's largest screen size: big, dense beans of the SL28 and SL34 varieties, washed twice and dried on raised beds. A light roast (2 of 5) keeps the juicy, winey acidity. Bright as a pour-over, bold as a plunger. Whole bean or ground for espresso, filter or plunger, in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg bags.

About this product
Kenyan coffee has a snap to it that is easy to recognise once you have tasted it: blackcurrant and citrus, with brown sugar underneath. This lot comes from the Mathira Hills farmers' society in Nyeri, where about 1 800 members grow coffee on small plots between their tea and bananas and deliver cherry to the society's wet mill. Pieter cupped eleven lots from Nyeri this year and chose this one for its clean, sweet finish.
In the cup
Blackcurrant, pink grapefruit, brown sugar. A medium body with a juicy, winey acidity. It is lively when hot and turns jammy as it cools.

How we brew it
A plunger gives this coffee body without dulling its acidity.
- Grind 30 g of coffee coarse, like rough sea salt.
- Add 500 g of water at 95 °C (a ratio of 1:16.7) and start a timer.
- At 4 minutes, stir the crust and skim off the foam.
- Press gently and pour it all out straight away, so the coffee does not sit on the grounds.
